My College Family

At BYU we have groups that get together every Monday night that we call FHE (Family Home Evening). Most college students live far away from their families. Especially at BYU- we have students from several countries and probably every state in the US.
Although technology like cell phones and Skype make staying connected to family much easier than occasional letters, it is still difficult to be away from that family tie. BYU has set up FHE groups to give us a sort of family away from home. There are FHE “moms” and “dad” that are assigned to each group as well as “brothers” (guys apartments) and “sisters” (girls apartments).
We get together every week and spend time together. We play games and get to know each other and try to stay up to date on everything that is happening in everyone’s lives (like big tests coming up or engagements being planned). We know that we can talk to and depend on our “family”.
My “dad” is from Hawaii. He’s a fun and friendly guy. Almost every time we come over, he pulls out his ukulele and we all sing songs like “Love at Home” or the classic “Over the rainbow” and then he asks how everyone is doing and asks if anyone has something to share. It’s great to have a family away from home that you know you can talk to and depend on. It reinforces in me, the importance of good “real” family connections. Family is essential to every aspect of life- even at college; you need a family.
