Expectations is a word that has always been present in my life. My mom, in all of her love and support, has placed much emphasis on her expectations of my life. She has wished to see my success, and has worked hard to make sure that I achieve that.
It seemed only appropriate, then, that in the midst of a stressful high school finals week several years ago, the Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations would appear on my bed. My mother knows me all too well- not only a subtle hint but my favorite medium to provide it.
The protagonist of Great Expectations, Pip, is an orphan. The novel, as well as theatrical and film renditions of it, follows his life and pursuit of love. Being an orphan, Pip has a lot of longing for a family structure. He proves throughout the novel his belief that having a family and having love is more important than having money or things. At the end of a tumultuous story, Pip proves to the reader that life is all about love, and about providing love for those who you choose to share with.
Expectations keep you going, provide you with something to work toward. I have high expectations for My Family Butterfly, and for the love and support that families can give and receive.
